Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii was engulfed in flames as wildfires ravaged the historic town. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed condolences and sympathy to the US government, people, and the victims' families, while also wishing a speedy recovery for the injured. According to authorities, the devastating wildfire, fueled by high winds from a nearby hurricane, claimed the lives of at least 55 people, making it one of the deadliest disasters in Hawaii's history. The brushfires on Maui started on Tuesday and quickly spread, leaving the seaside town of Lahaina in ruins. The rapid movement of the flames caught many off-guard, forcing them to either seek refuge in the streets or jump into the ocean in a desperate attempt to escape. Canadian tourist Brandon Wilson, who had come to Hawaii to celebrate his 25th anniversary with his wife, described the scene as a complete devastation. He expressed deep sadness for the people who lost their homes, lives, and livelihoods. These wildfires are part of a series of extreme weather events that have occurred in North America this summer, including record-breaking wildfires in Canada and a severe heatwave in the US southwest.
